Ten years ago, Sid Hille and Herbert Könighofer shared a stage for the first time – without knowing that this encounter would mark the beginning of an extraordinary musical journey. Since 2016, their collaboration has taken them to stages across Austria, Finland and Estonia, resulting in concerts, tours, recordings and ever-new musical adventures between improvisation, jazz, sound art and free musical encounter.
For their 10th anniversary, the duo returns to a place that holds a special significance for them: Vienna’s extraordinary Wotruba Church. This will be their second concert in this iconic space – and continues a special connection between their music and exceptional sacred architecture. In Finland, too, the duo has repeatedly been drawn to a remarkable church: Helsinki’s famous Temppeliaukio Church, built directly into solid rock. The Hille-Könighofer Experience has performed there several times – and will return to Helsinki during their anniversary year.
The Hille-Könighofer Experience is a refreshingly anarchic improvisational duo, spontaneously creating multilayered worlds of sound. Rhodes piano, theremin, synthesizers, saxophones, flutes, contra-alto clarinet and voice meet in a musical dialogue without boundaries. At times floating and meditative, at others powerful, playful and surprising – always created in the moment and always unique. The sculptural architecture of the Wotruba Church becomes a resonating space of its own: an exceptional setting for music shaped by openness, encounter and the unexpected.

As the solar eclipse on August 12 transforms the sky, JOYGURU – India Edition provides the perfect soundtrack between atmosphere, improvisation and rhythmic energy. Herbert Könighofer, Alokesh Chandra and Florian Tuchaček blend jazz, Indian music, ambient textures, loops and experimental sounds into a musical dialogue full of tension and dynamic flow. The warm sonic world of the sitar meets saxophones, flutes, electronic textures and driving rhythms.
Created especially for this extraordinary evening, the concert moves between focus and freedom, stillness and intensity — open, surprising and immersive.

“Aufheben” (“Lifting”) is a contemporary performance by Maayan Mozes Platnic in collaboration with musician Herbert Könighofer. Set in Auer-Welsbach-Park, the piece combines dance, sound and remembrance into an open ritual of resilience and rising. The work emerged from the testimony of Holocaust survivor Dita Segal, who recalled the park near her childhood home and the lilac flowers etched in her memory. From this memory arise two central images: The children’s circle from which Dita was excluded and the lilacs. Within the performance, the circle becomes a form of communal healing, while the lilac evokes sensory memory—where past, present, and future intertwine.

Die Birnbeitler, bekannt für ihre feinsinnig arrangierte, tief verwurzelte Blasmusik mit Ecken, Kanten und Bodenhaftung, begegnen den rhythmisch vielseitigen, improvisationsfreudigen Soundlandschaften von JOYGURU: Saxofonist Herbert Könighofer mit seiner „Two Saxes – One Face“-Technik, Bassist Tom Hierzberger und Schlagzeuger Florian Tuchaček bringen jazzige Leichtigkeit, tanzbare Grooves und eine ordentliche Portion Verspieltheit mit.
Gemeinsam erzählen sie musikalische Geschichten – mal augenzwinkernd, mal tiefgründig, mal tanzbar – aber immer überraschend und lebendig. Und wenn die Birnbeitler dabei ihre ureigene Mischung aus Tradition, Ironie und Mostviertler Klangkraft einbringen, dann wird’s nicht nur grooven, sondern garantiert auch ein bisschen – mostvierteln!

The long-standing musical collaboration between Austrian multi-instrumentalist Herbert Könighofer and renowned Indian musicians Dr. Pandit Ranajit Sengupta (sarode) and Kousik Banerjee (tablas) impressively blends diverse sound worlds. Classical Indian music, European jazz, world music, and free improvisation merge into a unique concert experience. With instruments like the slide saxophone, sarode, and tablas, atmospheric and meditative soundscapes are created.

Hans Tschiritsch is an instrument inventor and sound researcher. Fascinated by the phenomenon of overtones, he has been building his “Tschiritschophones” since the mid-1980s—musical instruments crafted with meticulous workmanship, bearing imaginative names such as Zwitscheridoo, Trompetuum Mobile, Oil Barrel Bass, or Hoarse Lung.
Together with Herbert Könighofer on the slide sax and many other instruments, and Michael Irger on cornbass and didgeridoo, he rolls out a fascinating sonic tapestry at the Lercherl von Hernals!
